The new liquid industrial coatings fall broadly into two camps:
- High solids, which use special low molecular weight resin systems, giving stoving paints at 65-70% solids by volume, 2-pack polyurethanes (50-55%) and Beckers' special BeckrySol 2-pack one coat anticorrosive finish (67-73%).
- Water borne, where the solvent carrier is substituted by water, dramatically reducing the VOC content. Beckers has been manufacturing water-borne paints for over 15 years and can offer products with a proven track record. These come in a wide variety of coating types including single- and 2-pack products and both air-drying and stoving systems.
Whilst in most cases water borne paints still contain some solvent as a stabiliser (and, in the case of emulsions, to help with film formation) this quantity is reducing and today is typically less than 5% of the total formulation.
